Java moss is the classic beginner plant. It can grow in virtually any fish tank as it does not require strong light, extra fertilizer or CO2. It is also great at providing fry/shrimplets with places to hide while they are young. 
Java moss is commonly attached to wood, decor, or just floats throughout the water column - it is not a stem plant, and does not need any gravel.
